In a roundtable discussion with ‘The Hollywood Reporter,’ Ridley Scott announced (or let slip) that he thinks the xenomorph, the acid-bleeding, saliva-dripping, face-hugging star of the ‘Alien’ franchise and one of cinema’s iconic sci-fi/horror creations, may be approaching its final appearance.

Alien: Covenant is arriving soon, whether we’re ready for it or not, and a short new clip assures us that this movie is definitely more horror than sci-fi. Even these thirty seconds are enough to make one feel antsy, and the final sound effect is enough to send a million chills down the spine. The Xenomorphs are back, baby!

It’s probably time to admit that we take Ridley Scott’s films more seriously than Scott himself. While we argue over cinematic universes, director’s cuts, and unnecessary sequels, Scott is out there having a good time making whatever movies pop into his mind at any given moment. Sometimes that means promising another half-dozen Alien movies before his newest one has even been released. Sometimes that means producing a Blade Runner sequel that few people wanted. And sometimes, just sometimes, it means bringing back a Roman warrior from the literal dead.

“My mantra has always been to scare the living s— out of you.” Those were Ridley Scott’s final words before he unleashed three scenes from Alien: Covenant to a packed theater at SXSW last night. Scott was joined by stars Katherine Waterston, Michael Fassbender and Danny McBride at a special screening of his original Alien, preceded by a sneak peek at footage from Covenant. You’re warned of potential spoilers from here on out, but it’s doubtful that Scott, who seems very confident about his “quite clever” prequel, would allow us to see footage that gave away too much.

Alien: Covenant will be the sixth Alien film released since Ridley Scott’s original 1979 movie (or eighth, if you count both Alien vs. Predator movies), and as such is the continuation of one of the longest-running franchises in film history. James Cameron, director of Aliens, recently spoke about his feelings on the series and revealed that he thinks it may have gone too far, although he does clarify that he’s down for whatever Ridley Scott wants to do.

Take it in, as FX debuts Hardy’s new Ridley Scott-produced period drama.

An Alien prequel starring Danny McBride? This could seriously be the movie we never knew we always wanted. In a bit of news that is equal parts surprising and kind of awesome, the former Eastbound and Down star and master of obnoxious humor is in talks to join Alien: Covenant, which seems to indicate that Ridley Scott may very well indeed be a genius. An evil genius, but a genius.
