Did you know that the Governor's Mansion was designed by folks from Shreveport?  Or that a total of ten governors and their families have lived there since it was built?  These are just some of the facts you'll find on a new web site for the Louisiana Governor's Mansion which was unveiled this week by First Lady Donna Edwards.

Designed by the architectural firm of Annan and Gilmer of Shreveport, the Louisiana Governor's Mansion was commissioned by Governor Jimmie Davis and was built in  1963.  It is located on Capitol Lake near the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge.  The mansion was designed in the Greek Revival style and patterned after Oak Valley Plantation which overlooks the Mississippi River in Vacherie, LA, just west of New Orleans.

In introducing the new web site, Edwards stressed that though she and her family live at the Governor's Mansion while her husband is in office, it is not their home.  She says it's our home--it belongs to the people of Louisiana--and she wants us to see it.  The  mansion is open for private tours which may be arranged on the new website.

In her introduction to the new site, Edwards explains, "As First Lady, it is my mission to give the people of Louisiana the home they deserve. I am constantly finding new ways we can restore the Mansion to the vision former Governor Jimmie Davis had for this historic building when he commissioned it more than fifty years ago.  This will be a home that represents our culture and our heritage. This will be a home that celebrates our resilience and our communities. This will be a home that is as welcoming as the people it represents."

Sounds like the Louisiana Governor's Mansion is in good hands.
