South Bossier and Shreveport residents might have to foot the bill for the cost of a new bridge over the Red River. DOTD leaders are considering a toll on the bridge. The money would be used to build a new bridge just north of the current bridge. The existing bridge would be turned into a pedestrian bridge.

Senator Barrow Peacock says he's been told that a toll on the existing bridge has been offered as one option to pay for a new bridge which is expected to cost $100 million dollars.

Dr. Shawn Wilson, DOTD Secretary tells KEEL News: "It is not our preference to do that, but we can not make improvements without bringing in more revenue. A toll is one option, but it is not our only option."

Another option for funding is an increase in the gas tax. Lawmakers will consider a measure to boost the tax by .23 cents a gallon. Many say that much of an increase would be DOA.
