The man accused of killing a Shreveport police officer last August will go to trial early next year.

Caddo District Judge Ramona Emanuel has set 28-year-old Grover Cannon's trial date for February 6, 2017, in Caddo District Court.

According to the Caddo District Attorney's Office, Cannon is charged with first-degree murder in Officer Thomas LaValley's death and with attempted second-degree murder in connection with a July 2015 attack. He also faces battery on a police officer for a December 2015 incident that happened while he was in jail.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty if Cannon is convicted of LaValley's murder. The officer was 29 years old when he was shot and killed in Queensborough while responding to a call about a prowler. LaValley had been with the department since 2011.

Caddo ADAs Ed Blewer, Bill Edwards and Ron Stamps will be prosecuting the case. Cannon will be defended by the Capital Defense Project of Southeast Louisiana, out of New Orleans.
