A fired state trooper in Louisiana gets his job back, but he will face discipline and a loss of rank. State Police Lt. Sheldon Perkins was stopped in Baton Rouge for suspicion of drunk driving and things went south pretty quickly.

Body camera from the troopers who made the arrest has been released of this stop on Burbank in South Baton Rouge.

The 49-year-old Perkins of Baton Rouge was fired after his arrest in August 2019 for drunk diving and speeding. But he has won his job back. During a hearing before the State Police Commission, Perkins was demoted to Sergeant and he will be suspended for 720 hours without pay.

Perkins has finished a diversion program and the charges were cleared from his record as a first offender.

During the 2019 stop, Perkins, who was not on duty at the time, was driving 85 miles an hour in a 55 mile zone. He also admitted during the stop “he had a couple of beers”. The arresting trooper noticed a smell of alcohol.

Perkins advised the State Trooper who pulled him over that he was a Lt. with State Police.

But Perkins did poorly on the field sobriety test. At one point during the incident, Perkins pushed the trooper and a taser was used on Perkins.

During the subsequent test, Perkins’ blood alcohol level was .177, more than twice the legal limit.

Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
