Wave of Gun Violence and Death Leave Shreveporters Angry, Dejected

City residents responded with anger and were demanding answers after gunfire erupted Saturday night at another of the city's most highly trafficked areas.

Details from a previous KEEL News story:

"13-year-old Kelvonte Daigre died in this violent event. Two other teens suffered life threatening wounds. Another teen was grazed by a bullet.

The shooting happened Saturday night at Bert Kouns and Millicent Way. One person is now charged in this case. That suspect is a juvenile and he is charged with 2nd degree murder.
Willis Knighton Pierremont was hit by some of the bullets."

The weekend violence comes on the heels of another shooting, this during the daytime, which occurred recently near the intersection of West 70th and Linwood Avenue.

Listeners anger was compounded by a recent KEEL interview by Substitute SPD Chief Wayne Smith, who said, "I doubt that you'd find anywhere in the country that's safe than Shreveport."

"If the interim police chief’s stupidly simplistic statement of safety in Shreveport was true, logic would dictate there would have been no reason to replace former Chief Raymond."

"They are unreachable. Get out and work in those communities and you'll see what I'm talking about."

"When do we hold parents responsible for the actions of their juvenile children."

"I guess we could also blame the US Welfare system but at some point people have to take accountability and step up and choose to be successful."

"Why are we not mentioning the parents role when it comes to children involved in illegal activities?"

"There are no consequences for juveniles committing crimes this is where the problem starts."
