This isn't another COVID stimmy, a tax return, or anything you have to pay back to the feds. This is YOUR money that the State of Louisiana has been holding on to for you.

Sure, we've all heard it before. The Louisana State Treasurer John Schroder wants you to go to this website to see if the state is holding any of your money. I've looked for my name in every single combination possible and I've never been owed any money. I think my brother got like $30 once, it was a final check from some restaurant he had worked at decades ago.

Either way, something is better than nothing, and according to the press release I received today from the Louisiana Department of Treasury, checks went out to over 27,125 people this week to the tune of $4.8 million. If you're wondering where this unclaimed property comes from, it's the result of old payroll checks, old bank accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest payments, stock certificates, and life insurance proceeds that businesses turn over to the state because they weren't able to remit the funds to the legal payee.

Using technology, the treasury office was able to update a lot of incorrect and outdated addresses. Reports show that one in six Louisiana residents has unclaimed property and the average value is $900. I like our odds!

Here's a list of local parishes, the amount of money being returned, and the total number of checks issued:

BIENVILLE $9,740.58 60
BOSSIER $134,742.86 700
CADDO $296,850.71 1820
DE SOTO $23,399.19 136
RED RIVER $4,818.37 27
WEBSTER $21,247.47 179

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Keep reading to see if your favorite beach town made the cut.
