We are now more than 4 months into the COVID-19 pandemic in America. The first reported case was in January, but it wasn't until March that most of the country began reacting with restrictions on the public. One of those restrictions is mandatory face coverings. But that particular face covering, or mask, policy has been hotly debated in the US since March.

Even though most Louisiana residents have come around to the idea of wearing a mask, the idea of a mask mandate has not always had much support. Even though the medical community is now trying to push the public to wear masks, they haven't always held that stance. In fact, the reason we fought them on masks is likely their fault.

There have been constant mistakes and inflation on COVID numbers from various levels of government. Including tracking deaths, cases, and antibody testing. These issues have caused serious mistrust between officials and the public. But then we learned that the medical officials actually lied to us about masks from the start.

That's right, medical officials, all the way from the local level of government to the White House, they all lied about whether or not we should wear masks. This lie grew so big, massive media outlets ran with their narrative. Including Good Morning America...

This lie was built on the idea that too many people would rush to purchase masks and face coverings, and it would cause a shortage within the medical community. That's not conjecture from the author either, that's the word from National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci. Here's what Dr. Fauci told The Street about the lie surrounding masks:

"...were concerned the public health community, and many people were saying this, were concerned that it was at a time when personal protective equipment, including the N95 masks and the surgical masks, were in very short supply.”

It wasn't just Fauci, local medical leadership latched onto this lie as well. Which caused a massive issue when those groups changed their tune. When the same people came back a couple months later to say "Hey, why aren't you wearing a mask? We told you to wear one" it caused major friction.

The same people who snapped at people for wanting to wear masks are snapping at the public to wear them. The leaders who lied to the public are now upset that the public doesn't trust them.

Again, most people are coming around to wearing masks, but its likely not because those leaders are now saying to wear them. It probably has more to do with other countries showing massive success in fighting COVID-19 through mandatory mask wearing. Like Vietnam...where they had very similar responses to the United States in the early response. From travel restrictions from China to school shutdowns, the two countries were very close in their responses. But the major difference was that Vietnam told their people to start wearing masks right away.

It wasn't just Vietnam, various other countries who are emerging from their pandemics used mask mandates early. While the United States had government leadership telling their people lies about face masks.

So when you see people pushing back against face mask mandates, don't blame those people. Blame the leadership who lied to them over and over.
