Will Millions for Superdome Renovation Help Shreveport?

Kyle France of the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District talks about the upcoming renovation to the Mercedes Benz Superdome, which has a tentative price tag of $450 million.

France explains that the rebuild, of which $90 million would come from the state, is good for all of Louisiana. "The total impact of what the Superdome does for the state every yea, an economic impact of $585 million a year, with an annual fiscal tax impact of close to $20 million.

"The way this renovation works is that the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District is putting up 47% ($210 million), the Saints are putting up $150 million, or 33% and we're asking the state to put up 20%, which is $90 million, so this iconic facility can be open another 30 to 40 years."

He then defends the monies put up by the state, explaining how the Superdome events benefit all of Louisiana. "The economic impact that the Louisiana Superdome has on the state budget is considerably more than (any other) facility. At the end of the day, the amount of revenue generated...clearly makes this something that we should reinvest in."

France also points out that the renovation will take about five years and will take place in phases to work around the Saints season and other major events.  The heaviest construction will take place during the football off-season months. Less disruptive work will continue each year during the football season with all games and other already contracted major events proceeding as scheduled.
