19 Candidates Apply to Be Next Shreveport Police Chief
Shreveport Mayor Ollie Tyler has released the names of 19 candidates who applied to be Shreveport's next police chief.
The deadline for applications was Friday, August 19, and the candidates qualified to take the Civil Service Examination, which will be given September 21. Each applicant must pass the exam to be considered for the position.
Among the names on the list are retired Shreveport Police Sgt. Jim Taliaferro, who's also the regional Crime Stoppers director, and Interim Police Chief Alan Crump, who was appointed to lead the department until a permanent chief was named.
Crump was appointed for 90 days during the search process after Chief Willie Shaw's retirement was effective July 31.
"This appointment is cricital in ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens and visitors, so I will take my time and make sure I select the right person for the job," Mayor Tyler said in a news release. "This person needs to have strong integrity, loyalty and commitment to service. I am also seeking someone with a servant's heart to ensure the safety of our community, as well as the fiscal acumen to operate an effective and efficient department."
