The office of Caddo Parish Coroner Dr. Todd Thoma has released an in-depth report on homicides in Shreveport for 2021. The report includes all murders from January 1st to May 31st of this year. Inside the report were statistics and demographics for all of the victims who have been killed in Shreveport during 2021.

As of May 31st, there have been 40 homicides in Shreveport. All 40 of the murders were shootings.

The youngest victim was just 5-years-old. Of the 40 victims, 8 of them were teenagers. The oldest victim was 57-years-old. Average age among all victims is 28.5-years-old.

Of the 40 victims, 4 were females, including the 5-year-old little girl. Of the 36 male victims, 34 were black males, while 2 were white males. That means 85% of all homicide victims in Shreveport so far this year have been black men.

There have been three separate days in 2021 where there have been three murders on the same day. Saturday March 13th, Tuesday May 4th, and Wednesday May 19th all witnessed three murders in that 24 hour period. Both March and May were the most violent months, with 11 homicides in each month. February only had 3 killings, with 10 in January, and 5 in April.

This current pace would put Shreveport at more than 80 murders for the year. The highest number of homicides in a single year in the city's recorded history came in 1993 when there were 76 homicides in the city. That would put 2021 on a tragically historic pace for homicides for Shreveport.

The current number of 40 homicides is higher than the entire 12 months of every year between 2008 and 2015. The highest single year total during that 8 year stretch was 36 murders in 2009. The 40 murders in the first 5 months of 2021 are the same number of murders the city saw in 14 months between January of 2011 and December of 2012, combined.
