Cigarette Butt Littering Comes With High Fines in Louisiana

Louisiana residents who dispose of cigarette butts outdoors might want to start saving up for the hefty fines to come.

Governor Bobby Jindal recently signed a law that adds cigarette butts to the state's definition of “litter,” which will allow law enforcement to write tickets with higher fines for people caught throwing them out of car windows.

The law states that any motorist caught throwing cigarettes or cigars out of the window of their vehicle, first offense, will be subject to a fine of $300 and eight hours of mandatory community service. Anyone busted for a second offense could receive a fine of $700 and 16 hours of mandatory community service. A third offense could earn a butt head a fine of $1,500 and 80 hours of mandatory community service cleaning up litter along Louisiana roadways. To make things worse, the culprit would also lose their license for a year.
