Councilman Nickelson: Why Liquor Stores Should Close at 9PM [VIDEO]

Shreveport City Councilman John Nickelson talks with 101.7 / 710 KEEL's Robert J Wright and Erin McCarty about his proposed legislation that would mandate liquor stores across the city close no later than 9pm.

Nickelson tells KEEL listeners that, "First, it's clear from conversations with other members of the council...that there are not the votes to move the closing time up to 9pm." But the first term councilman emphasizes that there was more to his proposal. "I do think that all members of the council agree that our current laws allowing liquor stores to stay open until four in the morning strikes the wrong balance between convenience and public safety.

Nickelson adds that the recent council approval of a package store at the corner of Kings and Gilbert - a vote that mandates a 9pm closing time for that store - "caused me to look at the citywide standard, the default closing time for all the stores, and 4am did not seem reasonable to me. So, that's how we start the conversation."
