Covid cases are on the rise in Louisiana. Nearly 4,000 new cases have been reported in the state since Friday. And this does not include folks who took home tests and have not required treatment.

The State Department of Health says of these new cases, more than 900 of them have had Covid before. LDH reports 11 Covid deaths since Friday. Most of the infection cases are among people between the ages of 5-17. This could indicate the infections are happening in school as most parishes are now back in session.

LDH warns folks that we are now in the middle of a sixth COVID-19 surge and it is highly recommended people ages six months and older be vaccinated against the virus.

388 people are in the hospital battling Covid this week but only 8 of them are on ventilators. In August of last year, during the largest spike in cases, more than 3 thousand people were in the hospital and 480 were on ventilators.

In northwest Louisiana, 45% of the population is fully vaccinated. In the New Orleans area, 67% are fully vaccinated while 57% of residents in the Baton Rouge area are fully vaccinated.
