Cursive Writing Requirement Returning to Texas Schools
Coming this Fall, students in Texas will once again start practicing the ancient art of cursive writing. CBS Austin is reporting that, starting with the 2019-2020 school year, children entering the 2nd grade will have learn these calligraphic ways in school as per a requirement of a 2017 law. These students will have to show mastery in cursive before the 5th grade.
As the father of a 4th grader, I can tell you this issue isn't as simple as black and white. More and more of the curriculum is accessed through a computer, tablet, or other device via an online portal. That means kids are already using a keyboard (or keyboard-type user interface) far more than a pencil and paper.
We have to ask ourselves this: How much of a priority should it be? Honestly, how much longer will we be writing anything? I understand the need to be able to sign our names, but time is ticking on our need to fill out forms on paper - and that's the only thing I can think of that I still actually "write."
