New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is facing about a six-week recovery timetable after injuring his thumb in the second game of the 2019 season. However, the future Hall of Famer believes he can return sooner.

Appearing on WWL Radio Wednesday night, Brees said he opted for a surgery that installed "a little piece of tape that they put on top of the ligament repair." This may allow for a quickened pace at which he can rehab.

"As far as the timetable for getting back though, they say six-to-eight weeks," Brees said. "I think I can beat that, but I'm just gonna take it one week at a time and see how things go."

In the meantime, Brees will be doing whatever he can to help his teammates pull off a big win Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

Coach Sean Payton told Dallas-area media yesterday that Brees is expected back in New Orleans this week after spending last week in Los Angeles.

Brees will be wearing a headset or earpiece on the sidelines Sunday night so he can help the offense during the game. He was absent from the Saints' victory this past Sunday over the Seattle Seahawks after having surgery earlier in the week.

"To watch from afar is really tough," Brees said.
