Granted, here in Northwest Louisiana, we tend to be a little slow in warming up to new concepts, but we eventually get there.

Much like how the idea of "Catch and Release" was slow to catch on with area bass fishermen, we deer hunters have been relatively slow in adopting the practices of growing bigger and better whitetails, but the tide on that is turning as well.

And now, to help our efforts, Trailblazer RC&D, is putting on a free whitetail deer workshop entitled "Improving Your Deer Herd Quality."

The workshop is scheduled for Friday, October 8 at the History Center of the Bossier Parish Library at 2206 Beckett Street in Bossier City and will feature renowned wildlife biologist David Moreland as guest speaker.

Moreland, the well-known author and speaker, served over thirty years with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries as a wildlife biologist, deer study leader for thirteen years and as chief of the wildlife division for three years, so his expertise is unparalleled in our area.

During the workshop which will begin at 6:00 pm and run until 7:30 pm, he'll discuss strategies to improve the health and well-being of the deer on individuals' property. This will include discussion of population density, nutrition needs, balanced age structures, and aging whitetail deer on the hoof.

To pre-register or for more information on this workshop, call or text (318) 237-8350 and provide the name of the workshop.

On-site registration begins at 5:30 pm, and refreshments will be served.
