A Bossier Parish Sheriff's Deputy is recovering after emergency brain surgery at Ocshner LSU Health Shreveport.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that I'm a good friend of the Chavis family. It's true, that you never know what tomorrow will bring and we should count our blessings daily and make sure our loved ones know how much we love and appreciate them.

After a normal week of LEO heroics, including recovering from a nasty bout of poison ivy after assisting our brothers and sister in south Louisiana, Lt. Robert Chavis started experiencing headaches followed by changes in vision. After a trip to the ER Sunday, Lt. Chavis was then transported to LSU Health and scheduled for surgery with Dr. Guthikonda. After a long day of waiting for news with baited breath, Dr. G has let the family know that Robert came through surgery well and almost, if not all, of the tumor that had been located in the Pituitary part of his brain and pressing on his Ocular nerves had been removed. Praise God!

The family would like to thank everyone for their continued support and prayers, they're going to need them moving forward through the recovery process. They'd also like to thank the entire team at LSU for their compassionate care, communication, and expertise. This writer would also like to thank Charles, the parking attendant, who didn't tow her vehicle! I’ve personally never witnessed this level of care before and the LSU Ocshner team deserves to be commended.

For those who don't know Lt. Chavis, he's the salt of the earth, the real deal. He treats me like a little sister and his wife is one of my closest, dearest friends. I love Robert, even if he did collude to make me wear an Alabama colored bridesmaid dress for their wedding on the day of the annual LSU/Bama showdown. Lt. Chavis has been with the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office since 2006. I’m biased, but I can safely say the world is a better place with a man like him in it.
