As of the latest update, 12 individuals have been infected, seven of which require hospitalization. Two people have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe complication associated with certain strains of E. coli. While no fatalities have been reported thus far, the situation demands immediate attention and caution from the public.

Investigations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have traced the source of these infections to organic walnuts sold in bulk bins at grocery stores like Whole Foods.

The walnuts were supplied by Gibson Farms, Inc., who has initiated a recall of the affected products. Consumers are advised to check their organic walnuts for expiration dates between May 21, 2025, and June 7, 2025.
