New Evidence Shows FBI Paid Geek Squad Staff to be Informants
According to government watchdog group the Electronic Frontier Foundation, documents recently released due to a FOIA request show that the FBI paid several Geek Squad employees to search for illegal materials on computers and devices sent in to them for repair. Geek Squad is the repair division of Best Buy, and has been ever since the corporate electronic retail giant purchased the company in 2002.
The group claims the official FBI documents show that not only did the bureau pay for information, they trained employees to thoroughly search certain individuals computers for sensitive documents, child porn, and other incriminating evidence without a warrant.
It's not just one Geek Squad member here and there either. According to the Washington Post, the Best Buy in Brooks, Kentucky purportedly had 8 employees working for the feds! There are lots of documents and details to read through - check them out here.
