Steve Lukather Amazed at Club’s Plan to Play Toto’s ‘Africa’ All Night
The classic Toto song “Africa” has made headlines yet again. A club in Bristol, England, announced plans to play the track on loop for a full night as a charity fundraiser, leading guitarist Steve Lukather to respond in amazement.
DJ Michael Savage will keep the song on repeat at the Exchange venue on Nov. 30, challenging the audience to endure it for as long as possible in aid of an African charity. “It's the go-to track to fill the dance floor," Savage told the BBC. “I drunkenly suggested I'd run a night playing just that track two years ago. I kept talking about it, and now I've got to do it."
Describing it as the “ultimate guilty pleasure” he added, “I feel quite sorry for the bar staff, they're going to be really stuck in the middle."
“This could be worse than waterboarding!! lol," Lukather tweeted in response to the news. "I mean WTF is going on with this tune? I mean its been GREAT for us in many ways but we recorded this as a deep cut track in 1981. NO idea what it would become! (pun intended) You think YOU are sick of it? But ..it's a gift now.”
After fans replied to his tweet, Lukather wrote, "I hope the body count is low. haha,” and noted that, while the song had “been VERY good to us no doubt,” he said he “could not listen to ANYTHING over and over and over, no matter what it was!”
In recent months “Africa” has been the subject of a Mario Paint cover version, a hit version by Weezer and a deliberately hideous out-of-key version that’s almost unbearable. In fact, UCR collected more than three dozen different versions for you to browse through.
