Shreveport Mudbugs Name New Head Coach
The Shreveport Mudbugs have officially named their next head coach. During the team's first luncheon of the year, the Bugs announced that Jason 'Soupy' Campbell will take over the helm and lead the team during the 2018-2019 season. Campbell will have a tall task ahead of him as he is replacing Coach Karlis Zirnis, who lead the team to an NAHL Championship last year.
The Bugs began their search for a new coach after Zirnis announced he was leaving the team to coach at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. 'Soupy' is no stranger to Mudbugs fans as he has spent his entire professional career with the Bugs.
First, Campbell was a player with the team during their WPHL and CHL years, winning league MVP in 2001. Since the Mudbugs were reborn in 2016, Soupy has served as an assistant coach and ran the youth hockey program.
Campbell and the Bugs will begin the defense of their Robertson Cup Championship in a couple weeks. The first pre-season games of the year will take place at George's Pond at Hirsch Coliseum August 31st and September 1st.
Then, the Robertson Cup Champion Mudbugs will open the regular season at home against the Corpus Christi IceRays on Thursday, September 13th. You can find the full schedule and buy tickets on the Mudbugs' website.
