Video of Shreveport Man Confessing to Shooting a Child
Before the arrest was made on suspected child shooter, 33 year-old Joseph Lee Smith, Smith apparently posted a video to social media confessing to the crime and saying it was an accident. Smith in the above video can be heard tearfully explaining the situation to whoever may have been listening on social media. The video was removed by the original poster, but a copy was obtained by local news group Love Shreveport-Bossier. Joseph Lee Smith was arrested after running off to Longview Texas, and is being held there until he can be transported.
Shreveport Police responded to a shooting at the 4900 block of Monkhouse Drive at the Super 8 motel Saturday. Officers located a 5-year old child who was suffering from a single gunshot injury to the head. The child’s mother was grazed by the gunfire and sustained minor injuries. The child was immediately transported to Ochsner LSU Health with life-threatening injuries. The mother was transported to Willis Knighton North for her minor injury and later released.
Smith says in the video that he fired his weapon out of his car, after spotting someone who he thought had robbed his girlfriend. After missing his intended target, he drove off, and later found out the child had been shot. Smith seems remorseful in the video, but also explains that he was not suppose to be in possession of the firearm in the first place.
