The most popular dog breed in the country is no surprise again this year. The American Kennel Club says the Labrador Retriever tops the list for the 27th year a row.

Why is this breed so popular? The AKC says it's a friendly, active, and outgoing pooch. Labs are also fun to play with an exceed at dog sports (like fetch and swimming for toys). These dogs are also some of the most popular service and therapy dogs.

“The Labrador Retriever has its paws firmly planted in Americans’ hearts,” says AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “It’s such a versatile and family friendly breed.”

So what breed is most popular in Louisiana? No surprise here. The lab is also the most popular dog in the Bayou State. Beagle is next on the list followed by the German Shephard

In fact, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed in 44 states. German shepherds came in first in four states, while French bulldogs and beagles are the most popular in one state each.
