The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) reported today, Tuesday, August 4, 2020, that a canine has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. This is the same virus that causes COVID-19 in humans. This is Louisiana's first canine version of COVID-19. Details on the breed of dog and its location have not been released at this time.

Earlier in the year, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claimed that pets were immune to the virus but later retracted the announcement after more data surrounding the Coronavirus proved that in fact, certain pets could indeed contract the virus. The CDC believes that the transfer of SARS-CoV-2 from pets to people is very low. However, the CDC warns that the transfer of COVID-19 from people to pets is relatively high.

Pet owners should watch for signs of respiratory and/or intestinal problems in pets who have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. In addition, if your pet seems unusually tired, this also may be reason to visit your veterinarian.

The LDAF suggests that people who test positive for COVID-19 let a friend or relative care for their animals until free of symptoms and 100% cleared by a health care professional.
