We have heard for years that teachers across the country are overworked and underpaid.  In Louisiana that is especially true, as educators here make approximately $2,200 less than the national average.  A measure to bring us up to speed has passed its final hurdle and, over the next 3 years will hopefully push teacher pay beyond the mean salary.

Currently, teachers in Louisiana make an average of $50,000 per year - but new legislation passed on Monday will help push that number to around $53,000 over the course of the next 3 years by doling out $1000 raises for each teacher per year.  Support staff at schools in the Sportsman's paradise will also get in on the salary increases with a $500 yearly raise.

According to the Advocate, this chunk of change (along with the $39 million set aside for public schools) will cost the state $140 million per year.

If you know a local teacher that deserves this raise and a $50 gift certificate to Notini's Italian restaurant, nominate them for Chica & The Bald Guy's Teacher of the Week below!
