83 Year Old Louisiana Man Gets Doctorate From LSU Friday
At 83 years old, Johnnie Jones is ready to become Dr. Jones. This Friday, the Marine Corps Vietnam vet will add a Ph.D. to his impressive list of achievements when he receives his doctorate degree in human ecology this Friday from LSU.
While serving his beloved corps in Vietnam, Johnnie started taking correspondence courses with LSU. After returning from the war, he earned his sociology degree from the University of Hawaii. The still Mr. Jones would later earn his Master's in
social work from LSU which he would apply in the correctional field, retiring as warden at Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in 2006. According to the Advocate, he is currently an assistant professor of criminal justice at Southern University.
The soon-to-be Dr. Jones says he isn't done yet - his next target is law school! The octogenarian says that challenging his brain with higher education keeps him sharp! It's worth noting that shortly after World War II, Jones dropped out of the 6th grade to help support his family. After taking night school while serving with the Marines to get his high school diploma, he never stopped. No word on when he will take a break from his retirement.
