Debate over an abortion bill in Louisiana heats up. The bill by Oil City Representative Danny McCormick called for murder charges against women who get abortions. But critics say the bill went too far and could actually criminalize women who have had abortions in the past. McCormick ultimately pulled his bill from the calendar after hearing some of the criticism by his colleagues. McCormick says many pro life lawmakers are wavering.

What Was the Big Issue with this Bill?

During the debate Representative Alan Seabaugh told his colleagues that there is no statute of limitations on murder and the verbiage in this bill could be a problem. Seabaugh authored an amendment to remove criminal charges against the mother and also eliminated the possibility that the use of contraception and even in-vitro fertilization could potentially place a woman behind bars.

Governor John Bel Edwards, a pro-life Democrat, has told lawmakers this bill went way too far and he would veto it if it passed.

Lawmakers are working on a bill that will make it clear that if the Supreme Court overturns Roe VS Wade, abortion would then immediately become illegal in Louisiana.  Seabaugh says Senator Katrina Jackson's bill is expected to pass and it would accomplish the goal many pro life lawmakers have been working on over the past few weeks.

McCormick says this has become an emotional issue and not a logical one.
