Mayor Perkins Considers Trash Collection Fee
Shreveport is one of the few cities in the country that includes trash pick up as part of its basic city services. However, that could soon be changing.
To help stabilize garbage pick up, Mayor Adrian Perkins is considering a monthly sanitation fee. At this time, the fee being considered is in the $16-18 range. Bossier City charges $24 monthly for trash pick up.
Since the early part of December, the city has been struggling to keep up with trash pick up. Many blame the lack of workers for the issue, as many city workers are leaving and taking jobs with private companies who pay more.
City spokesman Ben Riggs said a sanitation fee is one of many options being considered at the moment. In fact, Riggs says that "everything is on the table" at the moment and that the mayor is seeking a long-term solution to the problem.
Councilman James Flurry agrees that something needs to change but isn't sure a fee on residents is the answer. He urges that Mayor Perkins consider all options before trying to make residents pay a fee. The proposed fee could come up during Friday's City Council work session, but Flurry says the earliest it could be voted on is February.
