Never forget your license again!

Louisiana is leading the nation with LA Wallet, a new digital driver's license app, now available to the public.

The app was created under Louisiana law Act 625 by Rep. Ted James and allows drivers to always have a digital copy of their license on their cell phone or mobile device. This means you will always have access to your information even if you lose or misplace your physical driver's license.

LA Wallet's design was a collaborative effort between the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Louisiana State Police. The actual app design was done locally by Envoc, a Louisiana software firm.

This app is the first of its kind to fully launch in the United States and while LA Wallet is free to download, there is an in-app charge that will allow you to activate your license for "legal acceptance." According to KATC,

The digital license is valid for the life of a regular physical license and must be renewed via LA Wallet once the user's physical license has been renewed via the OMV. Updates to address and other information before a license's expiration date can be updated on the app by linking and relinking a license.

At the time of this post, the digital driver's license will be accepted by Louisiana State Police, but according to the official LA Wallet website, "official acceptance" at restaurants, bars, and TSA are still pending approval. So, no boarding aircraft or buying top-shelf margaritas via your smartphone now, but we'll keep you posted when the time comes.

The app is compatible with both iOS and Android phones. Definitely, an app worth having on your smartphone.
